現時点の Anderson .Paak 名義の最新アルバム "Ventura" の1つ前のアルバムです。
ロスのビーチ "Venice" と "Malibu" の2作の後は、ビーチではなく近郊の街 "Oxnard" がアルバム・タイトルになりました。
ちなみに次の "Ventura" も近郊の街になります。
オクスナードは Anderson .Paak の生まれた街でもあるので、思い入れの強いタイトルでしょう。
前2作はまだ聴き込んでいないんですが、ラップラップしたものから、今作から少し洗練されたサウンドに変化しているような気がします。
そしてそれは次作にも繋がって行くような。"Ventura" を聴いたときは、あまり本作との連続性は感じられませんでしたが、思い違いでした。確かに歌モノの比率は上がっていますが。
両作に共通するのは、Dr. Dre が制作に関わっていること。
Dr. Dre 自体、僕はほとんど聴いてこなかったので、特徴を言い表すことはできないのですが、サウンド面の変化は彼の影響が大きいのかもしれません。
Dr. Dre は西海岸ヒップ・ホップ (G-Funk)の中心人物と言われています。G-Funk は東海岸ラップと比べてスローテンポでシンセサイザーの多用を特徴としているようですので、このアルバムを聴くと納得です。
(ちなみに、ちょっと前のドラマで松坂慶子が演じる主人公の母は、東海岸ラッパー派でした。)
相変わらず Anderson .Paak の声がいい。
ざらつきがあり、比較的スッと入ってきます。
ラップしかやりませんので、メロ部分の多くはゲスト・ミュージシャンが担っています。もちろんラッパーはラップもやってますが。

何と言ってもリード・シングル #3 "Tints" がいいですね。Anderson .Paak が歌って、西海岸ヒップ・ホップのスター Kendrick Lamar のラップが聞けます。
このパターンがいいんじゃない?
と思いますが、意外とこのパターンは多くありません。でもこのパターンの曲になるとガゼンいいです。
#10 "Anywhere" なんかもそう。
サウンド面でも "Anywhere" や #7 "Smile/Petty" #11 "Trippy" なんかは、スロー・テンポでいい感じですね。
