The Soul Searchers のドラマーだった Ricky Wellman を Miles は引き抜きます。
1987年のこと。
Chuck Brown のやっていたシャッフル・ベースの Go-Go ビート、これが気に入ったんでしょうね。
スタジオ・アルバムでは 1989年の "Amandla" から参加しています。
このライブアルバムは、1988年から1991年までのライブを集めたもので、すべての曲で Ricky Wellman が叩いています。
曲調が Go-Go ビートの曲ばかりではないのですが、Ricky Wellman は自然に、うまくバンドに溶け込みビートを刻んでいるように感じます。
集められたライブ音源は、ほとんどが1985年の "You're Under Arrest"、1986年の "Tutu"、1989年の "Amandla" から。
ベストな11曲を選曲して、セット・リストに近い構成に並び替えたとのこと。
年と場所がバラバラですが、違いは感じられず、統一感はあります。
この頃の Miles バンドの音楽監督をつとめていたのは Marcus Miller ですが、ライブには参加してません。
でも、アルバムの中で一番カッコいいのは、Miller が作った "Tutu" じゃないでしょうか。
テーマがきまってて、スタジオよりライブ向きですね。
ちなみに "Tutu" は反アパルトヘイトの Desmond Mpilo Tutu 大主教のことで、"Full Nelson" は Nelson Mandela です。
黒人意識が強い Miles らしいネーミングです。
目玉は、ラストの "Hannibal"。生前最後のライブパフォーマンスです。
1991年7月21日フランスで。2か月後に65歳で亡くなります。
このライブ・パフォーマンスを聴くと、とても死期が迫ってきている人には思えません。
ジャズ・マナーじゃなく、ファンク・マナーでジャズをやり切って、新しい王道を作っているところはさすがです！
